The Christmas team have all arrived safely in Romania. 5 of the team members left on Nov 30 to join Erin Fukumoto who had already arrived and was waiting with the volunteers for the rest of the team. They will bring joy to 4 orphanages, one special needs school and 2 elderly care centers over a period of 9 days. They will distribute over 400 Christmas “bags of basics” which include t-shirt, underwear, socks and towel as well as fruit and a gift. The team of about 20 (in total) will also sing songs, do Christmas drama and stories, and provide nutritious food. Thank-you for your support and continued prayer for the team!

Click the link to read more about all of the fun we've been having and to see some great pictures ...]]> We have completed 2 days of Camp Discovery at the Ilisua Orphanage and we are amazed at the way things have gone and the great weather! There are not any “rainy day facilities” to speak of here and rain has been forecasted everyday! However, it has only rained a very little bit … AND the weather has been cooler than normal! Wow! This group of kids is very energetic and there are about 5 kids who are totally uncontrollable. The team members who have been assigned to them have done a great job but are quite tired by the end of the day. The last day of this camp is tomorrow/Sunday and then the team comes travels back to Cluj on Monday … then gets up about 3am to go to the airport on Tuesday.

There were 3 Bible teaching sessions on the “love of God” using only the story of the “Prodigal Son” in every teaching session, small group discussion, skit/video activity etc. There was a good amount of challenge and honest sharing. There was also a lot of counselling that took place. This was very well prepared by the team of over 10 Canadians who helped to lad this retreat. Over 20 volunteers and guests were the beneficiaries of months of preparation. Thank you to those of you who have supported the team! Tomorrow we head out to the Ilisua orphanage to run a 3 day camp before some of the team heads home to Canada at 6am Tuesday morning.

The team arrived yesterday by train to the Beclean orphanage where they will be staying for 6 nights. Today the team went to the Ilisua orphanage (25 minutes away) and put on an “indoor program” because of the rain. It is rainy and colder here. We are normally used to shorts and t-shirt weather! The children were so happy to be with the Canadian-Romanian team and received lots of personal attention which they would never otherwise receive. Team members who had never been there before were moved by the unusually poor conditions. Just before we left, we handed out bananas and oranges supplied by money raised by some ambitious staff kids from Muskoka Woods.

Later this afternoon, we will host a “cook-out” for the Beclean orpahanage. Sunday, after an “in house church service” we will visit some “shut ins” at the an elderly care hospital in town. On Monday we will bring in a “pizza party” (sponsored again by staff kids from Muskoka Woods) to the children at Ilisua…

Things are going really well here in Cluj, the sun’s even shining today after two days of cold and wet weather.

The team’s first trip was at an elderly care centre where they gave out bananas, sang worship songs and practiced their Romanian. The language barrier was something that most people felt was a challenge and disappointed they were not able to carry on a full conversation. We were so grateful for the romanian volunteers who were there to translate conversations beyond ‘hello, my name is… how are you?’ This early challenge encouraged the team to study their Romanian.

The next two days we had the opportunity to spend time with two very different groups of children, a school for children with special needs and Prichindel orphanage. We were able to play games, sing songs and do crafts. The team’s high energy and infectious personalities made it easy to make quick connections with the kids.

The team has bonded extremely quickly and has lost no time getting to know the Romanian volunteers. Our evening debriefs have been great times of sharing and opportunities to see the way God is working through each of us.
